Dominican University Masters in Education Programs

     Dominican University has several Master of Arts in Education programs that can be earned online.  These programs afford students the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to advance careers as well as increase salary and meet the challenges and expectations in today’s classrooms.  With the online program, you will have the same textbooks, same faculty, and same curriculum as the on campus students, but will be afforded the luxury of completing coursework from the convenience and comfort of your own home.  You will also have access to the extensive online resources of the Rebecca Crown Library as well as assistance from Dominican’s Center for Career Development.  The program can be started during one of six sessions throughout the year, and the degree can be achieved within 18 months. 

    One of the master’s degree programs at Dominican University is the Master of Arts in Education:  Reading.  You will complete 12 courses that take eight weeks each to complete.  You will learn how to support reading skills by creating conducive learning environments, improve student’s reading abilities by focusing on the emotional and physical factors that impact students’ literacy.  You will use the latest literacy development techniques in order to help students reach their full potential.  You will also be able to coach other educators as well as parents in order to teach reading skills both in the classroom and home.  By having a master’s degree in education you will be able to develop curriculum programs that use the most recent strategies that support student literacy.  You will have the skills to create, administer, and interpret classroom assessments.  You will be able to improve your ability to select and evaluate materials for both classroom and small group use.  You will be able to apply philosophies of reading and writing instruction, and you will be able to better meet the needs of struggling readers. 

     A black student working on a laptop in a chair.A second online master’s degree in education from Dominican University is the Master of Arts in Education:  Elementary Education.  By earning this degree, you will be able to enhance your skills and knowledge as an educator to better understand learning and meet the needs of your students.  Just like the previous degree, you will also need to complete 12 courses of 8 weeks each, which adds up to 36 credit hours.  The Master of Arts with a concentration in Elementary Education can be earned in just eighteen months.  Through this program, you will learn how to apply the most effective learning strategies and improve the learning outcomes for a diverse student population.  You will learn how to better manage challenging classroom behaviors as well as how to resolve conflicts.  You will also learn the important skills necessary in order to help address the emotional and educational needs of children who have various disabilities.  By obtaining a master’s in elementary education, you will have developed the latest research based techniques to handle diverse teaching environments.  You will be able to integrate students with disabilities into the general education program.  You will know how to make learning assessments that are appropriate for your students.  You will have the ability to design learning opportunities that are based on the latest research about learning and motivation, and you will have a repertoire of strategies to help you improve the learning outcomes for students with various disabilities.

     The third option for an online master’s degree in education from Dominican University is to obtain a Master’s of Art in Education:  English as a Second Language.  This is a concentration that is so important and much needed in today’s society, as many children are coming from Spanish-speaking households.  These teachers are needed to help students become proficient in English.  Again, to earn this master’s degree, you will need to complete 12 eight week courses for a total of 36 credit hours.  You will be able to finish this online degree in just 18 months.  You will learn a variety of things through this degree program.  You will be able to assist students with acquiring English proficiency by learning new skills and techniques.  You will be able to better manage the learning environment for non-English speaking students.  You will be able to support the needs of your ESL students in an inclusive classroom climate.  You will be able to increase students’ literacy level and assist them through a step-by-step process of language acquisition.  You will also personally benefit from the Master in the Art of Teaching ESL.  You will be able to assess the skills of English Language Learners and will gain the ability to handle diversity when teaching English as a second language.  You will expand your understanding of cultural differences and how they impact student learning.  You will have the skills needed to teach ESL and improve motivation of these students.  You will have the knowledge to be able to differentiate among different cultural processes and improve student learning outcomes using research findings.
